PowerPlate & therapeutic exercise

PowerPlate rehab and a small number of exercises that suit you, so the work done in treatment has the best chance of lasting. It starts with a 30-minute Initial Assessment, and you decide what happens next.

PowerPlate whole-body vibration platform in the rehabilitation area at Vitalign, West End
Why it matters

Joints adapt to how they’re loaded

That principle runs both directions. Load a joint poorly for long enough and it changes shape in response. Load it well and it adapts to that instead.

Which is why treatment that only addresses the sore segment tends to be temporary. If the loading pattern that produced the problem is still there when you walk out, the problem generally comes back.

Therapeutic exercise is how that pattern gets changed: by building strength where it is missing, restoring range where it has been lost, and retraining movement that has become inefficient.

The rehabilitation area

We have a purpose-built rehabilitation space at the practice, so prescribed exercise can be taught and supervised properly rather than handed over as a printout. It includes:

  • PowerPlate whole-body vibration
  • Cervical traction
  • Crossover Symmetry shoulder rehabilitation
  • Roman chair for 45-degree back extension
  • Weights, resistance bands and BOSU balls

Rehabilitation is prescribed with all of our personalised care plans: it is not an add-on for the keen.

PowerPlate, specifically

A PowerPlate is a vibration platform. Holding a position on it produces rapid, small involuntary muscle contractions, which means you can load muscle meaningfully in a short time and at relatively low joint stress. That combination is useful in rehabilitation, where the person in front of you often cannot tolerate conventional loading yet.

We use it for strength and power work, balance and coordination, and circulation.

What a program actually looks like

The assessment identifies what is weak, what is stiff, and what is moving inefficiently. From there a program might include:

  • Mobility work to restore range and reduce muscle tension
  • Strengthening for the muscle groups that support the affected region
  • Core and trunk stability, which underpins most spinal loading
  • Proprioceptive work for balance and coordination: the movement-quality side
  • Functional patterns that match what you actually need to do

The guiding principle is: as little as will do the job. Long, elaborate programs get abandoned in week two. A small number of specific exercises, done consistently and reviewed as things change, is what works.

Stabilise, strengthen, then perform

That order matters. Loading a joint that is not yet stable is how people end up back where they started. Progression is earned, not scheduled.

Questions

Exercise & PowerPlate, answered

A PowerPlate is a whole-body vibration platform. Standing or holding a position on it causes rapid, small muscle contractions, which lets you load muscle meaningfully in a short time and at low joint stress. We use it for strength, balance and circulation work as part of a rehabilitation plan.

No. The starting point is wherever you are. Programs begin with what you can currently do well and build from there: the aim is to load tissue at a level it can handle, which is a different thing from a hard workout.

As little as will do the job. Long programs get abandoned. Most people get a small number of specific exercises, done consistently, and reviewed as things change.

There is overlap. The difference here is that the exercise is prescribed off the back of the same examination that informs the rest of your care, and it targets the loading pattern we think contributed to the problem in the first place.

About 30 minutes with Dr Matthew Schmerl, chiropractor: a full history, an examination, and a clear explanation of what we found and your options. If it is safe and suits you, you can be treated on the day. Fees are shown when you book online, so you see the cost before you confirm. X-rays are charged separately and only taken when clinically indicated.

No. After the assessment we explain what we found and your options, answer your questions, and you decide what is right for you. If chiropractic is not the right fit, we will tell you and suggest who to see.
