What makes this practice different
Most people are told that the changes showing up in their spine are just part of getting older. Wear and tear. Nothing to be done. We’ve never found that a satisfying answer.
Joints adapt to how they’re loaded. Load them well and they hold up. Load them poorly, awkwardly, repeatedly, for years, and they change shape in response. So when you come in, the first question isn’t only what hurts. It’s how is this spine moving, and how has it been loaded over time?
That takes a little longer to explain and it’s a more honest picture of what’s going on. It’s also why a first visit runs about 45 minutes rather than fifteen. More about our approach.
Who you’ll see
Dr Matthew Schmerl — Bachelor of Science majoring in Anatomy at the University of Queensland, then a Master of Chiropractic at Macquarie University in Sydney. Ahpra registered chiropractor CHI0000992555, member of the Australian Spinal Research Foundation, and a WorkCover Queensland and Department of Veterans’ Affairs provider.
Jessica and Aoife run the front of the practice: bookings, health fund claims, and any WorkCover or DVA paperwork.
Getting here from around Brisbane
West Village sits on Boundary Street between Mollison and Jane Streets. The Eaves is the building on the Boundary Street side; we are Suite 3 on Level 1.
- West End and Highgate Hill: walking distance for much of the suburb.
- South Brisbane and Southbank: a few minutes by car or a short bus trip along Boundary Street.
- Brisbane CBD: a few minutes across the river, which makes appointments before or after work practical.
- Further afield: two hours of free undercover parking beneath West Village means driving in is straightforward.
What we have here
Four treatment options and on-site diagnostics, under one roof: chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression on the Chattanooga Triton DTS, Erchonia cold laser therapy, and PowerPlate and rehabilitation in a purpose-built area. Plus digital spinal imaging in the building, including motion study X-ray.
Which of these you’d use, if any, depends entirely on what we find. Not everyone needs all four.
What people come in with
Most commonly low back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, disc injuries, postural strain from desk work, and sporting injuries. We also see a lot of people after car accidents.
And if we’re not the right people
Part of the first visit is working out whether what you have is something chiropractic can help with. If it isn’t, you’ll get a clear explanation and a recommendation about who to see instead.
